Nearly half of Ayushman Bharat's 90 crore ABHA accounts are held by women

The government announced on Saturday that the National Health Authority (NHA)‘s Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM) has achieved the significant milestone of 90 crore Ayushman Bharat Health Accounts (ABHAs) throughout the nation.

With more than 15. 3 crore ABHAs, Uttar Pradesh is in first place, followed by Rajasthan and Maharashtra with 7. 1 crore each, Bihar with 6. 3 crore, and West Bengal with 5. 9 crore ABHAs.

The nationwide adoption of digital health services is also evidenced by substantial contributions from Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, and Karnataka.

India’s road to a linked, interoperable, and citizen-centric digital health environment takes a huge stride with this accomplishment. Since the introduction of ABDM, there has been a steady increase in ABHA creation.

According to the Ministry of Health, cumulative ABHA production grew from 14. 7 crore in 2021 to 30. 4 crore in 2022, 50. 6 crore in 2023, 72. 2 crore in 2024, and 84. 5 crore in 2025, before exceeding the 90 crore milestone in 2026.

The creation of over 90 crore ABHAs demonstrates the increasing engagement of people, states, UTs, and ecosystem partners in the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission. “ABHA is a crucial move toward giving citizens safe, permission-based access to their own health information,” according to Dr. Sunil Kumar Barnwal, CEO of the National Health Authority.

ABHA, he continued, would facilitate continuity of care, lessen reliance on paper records, and promote a more seamless, transparent, and citizen-centric healthcare delivery system as ABDM adoption grows.

Full saturation has been reached in Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu, Lakshadweep, Ladakh, and Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

49. 75 percent of all ABHA users are women, making up almost half of all created ABHAs. This represents a significant move toward giving women, particularly those in rural regions, safe digital access to their health records.

Starting with the initial interaction with the healthcare system—including maternal and child healthcare, immunisation, and other vital health services—ABHA may facilitate care continuity.

ABHA makes it easier for people to digitally link health information produced across various healthcare facilities and applications.

This reduces the requirement to transport paper medical documents and allows for secure sharing of health information with healthcare professionals whenever necessary and with permission.
