Dr. Jitendra Singh, the Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Science and Technology, announced that India had created “Nafithromycin,” its first indigenously discovered antibiotic that is effective against resistant respiratory infections and especially helpful for cancer patients and poorly managed diabetics.
The minister claims the antibiotic is the first fully conceptualized, developed, and clinically proven molecule in India, marking a major breakthrough in the pharmaceutical industry’s transition to self-reliance.
Dr. Singh added that India plans to sequence one million human genomes, having already done so for over 10,000.
He stated that the gene therapy study marked a turning point in Indian medical research history with a 60–70% repair rate and no bleeding incidents.
The New England Journal of Medicine published the findings, highlighting India’s rising prominence in cutting-edge biomedical research.
The Anusandhan National Research Foundation (ANRF), which will spend a total of Rs 50,000 crore over five years, with Rs 36,000 crore coming from non-government sources, is a significant move in this direction, according to Dr. Singh.
In order to propel its scientific and research growth, India needs to create a self-sustaining ecosystem, Dr. Singh stated at the opening of the three-day Medical Workshop on “Harnessing Artificial Intelligence for Multi-Omics Data Integration and Analysis.”
He claimed that self-sustaining, innovation-driven models with significant private sector involvement were used by the majority of countries that had attained international reputation in research and innovation.
The government’s Department of Biotechnology supported the first successful indigenous clinical trial for the treatment of hemophilia, which was conducted at Christian Medical College Vellore, a non-government hospital. The minister also announced that India had made significant progress in gene therapy.
He added that one of the most revolutionary technologies of the present period is artificial intelligence (AI), which is changing decision-making, government effectiveness, and healthcare accessibility.
In order to enhance healthcare results, the minister praised organizations like as Sir Ganga Ram Hospital for their innovative multidisciplinary techniques that integrate genetics, biotechnology, and artificial intelligence.
