Dr. Reddy's Labs will rename the medication Olymra

Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories, a significant pharmaceutical company, informed the Delhi High Court on Friday that it will be changing the brand name of its semaglutide medication from ‘Olymviq‘ to ‘Olymra.’

Following the judge’s suggestion that the current name may be confusing in a pharmaceutical context, the firm told the court that it would submit a fresh brand name.

The conflict arises as India begins to accept generic versions of semaglutide after the patent expires, resulting in competition among pharmaceutical firms and disagreements about branding.

Additionally, the corporation stated that it is the first Indian business to be granted a license by the Drugs Controller General of India for generic semaglutide.

According to NDTV Profit, the case revolves around the question of whether ‘Olymviq’ is excessively similar to ‘Ozempic’, a well-known medication for diabetes and weight management.

In India, the company has said it has launched its injectable semaglutide called ‘Obeda,’ which is an important step in making GLP-1 receptor agonist therapy more available for treating type 2 diabetes.

In India, unmet patient demands in sophisticated diabetes therapies will be addressed, and access to these treatments will be increased with this launch, according to Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories CEO, Erez Israeli.

According to the report, the court emphasized the phonetic and visual similarities between the two names at the hearing, pointing out that such a resemblance could confuse patients, physicians, and pharmacists.

The court had previously instructed the corporation to cease the launch and sale of the product due to worries that it was too similar to Novo Nordisk’s “Ozempic. ”

Semaglutide is sold by Novo Nordisk under a variety of brands, such as Rybelsus, Ozempic, and Wegovy.

As of 2 p. m. on the BSE, Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories shares were trading about 2% lower at Rs 1,274. 75, which was the intraday low.
